Derek Hough is a multi-talented artist who has achieved success and fame in various fields of entertainment. He is best known as a professional dancer, choreographer, and judge on the popular TV show “Dancing with the Stars,” where he has won a record-breaking six times and earned three Emmy Awards for his outstanding choreography.
He is also an actor, singer, and author who has appeared in movies, TV shows, stage productions, and music videos. But Hough is not only a dancing star but also a building star. Hough has a passion for building things and has designed and built his own Los Angeles home from scratch.

He likens building a house to choreography, as it involves nurturing something from an idea to a reality. During an episode of his Facebook talk series, “Life in Motion with Derek Hough,” in June 2018, he revealed that he had been building his own house. It had been a couple of years since he had started working on the design, and contrary to what he had anticipated, building a house wasn’t a short and easy process.
Hough has been living in his cozy and stylish home with his girlfriend and now wife, Hayley Erbert, a trained ballroom dancer who met Hough on the set of “Dancing with the Stars” season 21 in 2014. They started dating later on and have been inseparable ever since.
They have shared many memorable moments and experiences, such as traveling, dancing, performing, and celebrating milestones. They have also supported each other through the highs and lows of life, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which they spent together in their home.
The pandemic forced many people to stay home and practice social distancing, but for Hough and Erbert, it was an opportunity to grow closer and have fun. Hough said, “Being cooped up with my girlfriend, it’s been great.” He joked that it was a good time for couples to know if they belonged together; in their case, the result was a stronger bond.
The couple filled their time with quarantine activities and adventures, such as binge-watching, creating dance videos, date nights, cooking together, and dressing up for “escape nights.” The only trend they were not ready to participate in was the “quarantine baby boom.” Hough admitted that it wasn’t time for a new family member unless it was a furry one.
Erbert had been trying to get a puppy for a while, but Hough had always said no. He agreed that the pandemic was the right time, though they were already parents to several other animals.
The pair cemented their bond when they recently celebrated their love in a stunning wedding ceremony on August 26, 2023, in Monterey County, California.
The couple got engaged in June 2022 and exchanged vows in front of 106 guests in a redwood forest. They chose the location because of its natural beauty and symbolism. However, their marital bliss was soon interrupted by a health scare that would require Erbert to undergo a skull implant surgery.
On December 7, 2023, Hough revealed on his Instagram that his wife had become disoriented after a performance the previous day and had been rushed to hospital. Though he announced that she was in stable condition, he revealed that she had been diagnosed with a cranial hematoma, which had resulted from a burst blood vessel.
He added that she needed to have a craniectomy, a neurosurgical procedure where a section of the skull is removed to alleviate pressure on the underlying brain. He concluded the post by thanking the responders and medical team who took care of his wife. He pleaded, “I ask for your positivity and prayers.”
On December 9, 2023, Hough shared an update on Instagram, informing his fans that Erbert was doing fine and was recovering. A week later, he posted a video of himself and Erbert taking a walk. According to Hough’s frequent updates, Erbert has been progressing well in her recovery.
He described her recovery process as nothing short of miraculous. The first surgery had been a success, and they were anticipating a second one in a few weeks. This procedure involves inserting a skull implant, replacing the portion removed during the craniectomy, and restoring the skull to its natural shape to protect the brain.
Hough expressed gratitude for the incredible support and medical care Erbert received, emphasizing how fragile life is and the rapidity with which circumstances can change. Despite the challenges, he acknowledged the strength and resilience within him and his wife and the power of a supportive community.
After thanking those who had supported them during the difficult time, he concluded, “While this isn’t the holiday season either of us envisioned, it’s one that we’re incredibly grateful to have. We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it.”
Hough and Erbert live together in their stylish LA home, which Hough designed and built himself. The home features a modern and minimalist design, with white walls, wooden floors, and large windows that allow natural light and fresh air.
