Elton John Moved to Tears During New Album Session

At 78, the iconic Sir Elton John remains as passionate as ever, pouring heartfelt emotion into his latest musical work. While working on his upcoming album Who Believes in Angels?, the legendary performer experienced an intensely emotional moment in the studio.

During the recording of the song When This Old World Is Done With Me, penned by his long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin, Elton found himself overwhelmed by the depth of feeling the track evoked.

“I got to the chorus and just broke down,” Elton revealed in a recent episode of the Smartless podcast.
“You start thinking — how much time is left? You think about your children, your partner… I just cried and cried. And it’s all on film.”

A DEEPLY HUMAN MOMENT, PRESERVED ON FILM
One of the most heartfelt scenes from the album’s creation was captured on camera and later included in the short documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, which premiered in October 2023.

Brandi Carlile, who played a key role in shaping the album, described witnessing Elton’s emotional breakdown in the studio:

“It felt honest, deeply human — even a little uncomfortable. And that’s what gave it such weight,” she reflected.

FACING DOUBT, FINDING LIGHT
Despite a lifetime of global success, this project almost never came to life.

“I was struggling mentally. I had more doubt than ever before,” Elton revealed in an interview with BBC Radio 2.
At one point, overcome with frustration, he abruptly left the studio, tossing his headphones aside and calling the session “a f***ing nightmare.”

But through openness and the unwavering support of those around him — Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and producer Andrew Watt — the album slowly found its voice again.

“If not for them, I don’t think it would’ve been finished,” Elton said.
“All that fear and uncertainty… somehow turned into something beautiful.”

A REFLECTION ON LIFE, LOSS, AND LASTING IMPACT
Now in a new stage of his life — after his farewell tour and following serious health challenges — Elton considers Who Believes in Angels? one of the most meaningful albums he’s made in decades.

At its heart, the album explores aging, emotional vulnerability, legacy, and enduring love. For Elton, the most moving art comes from embracing one’s true self.

“When the armor comes off, that’s when the music becomes real.”
